Air Navigation Services Overview (ANS)
Air Navigation Services Department is responsible for the provision of Air Traffic Management (ATM), Communications, Navigation and Surveillance systems (CNS), Search and Rescue (SAR) and Aeronautical Information Services/Aeronautical Information Management (AIS/AIM). These services are provided to air traffic during all phases of flight operations or navigation (approach, aerodrome and en route)
Air
Traffic Management (ATM). The dynamic and integrated
management of air traffic and the airspace. ATM includes Air Traffic Services
(ATS). Main objectives of ATS is the provision of:
- Air traffic control service
-ATC- control and prevent collision between aircraft on ground and in the air.
- Flight information service
- Alerting service
- Air traffic advisory service
Search and Rescue (SAR) – A service for the performance of distress monitoring, communication, coordination and search and rescue functions, initial medical assistance or medical evacuation, through the use of public and private resources, including cooperating aircraft, vessels and other craft and installations.
Communication Navigation and Surveillance
- Communication - Provision of facilities for the purpose of ensuring communication between two or more aeronautical stations e.g. controller/pilot voice/data communication, interfacility communication.
- Navigation – Provision of aeronautical radio navigation aids for the safe navigation of traffic from one point to another e.g., VOR, NDB, ILS.
- Surveillance – Provision of facilities, both satellite and/or ground-based system that enables the identification of aircraft e.g., Automatic Dependent Surveillance (ADS-B), Primary Surveillance Radar and Secondary Surveillance Radar (PSR/SSR)
